The motto of Aalto University School of Business is Better business – better society. It crystallizes the outlook how research and education in business can support the renewal of our economy, the production and consumption patterns in order to enable a sustainable future.

Sustainability is about securing an equitable social foundation for human well-being. Simultaneously, it cannot transgress ecological planetary boundaries that define the limits of Earth’s ecosystems and earth-system processes to support humankind’s existence – into an indefinite future.

For example, climate change, biodiversity loss and increasing inequalities are global challenges that threaten the well-being of humankind. The global sustainability crisis that humankind is experiencing requires us to focus on a habitable planet, while at the same time providing fair and equal opportunities for every human. Finland has set its own target on being carbon neutral by 2035 and is committed to the UN Sustainable development goals (SDG). Higher education and business schools are a key actors in promoting and enabling the necessary and indispensable systemic transformation towards sustainable societies.
