The Birds We Meet Again
by Boer Ling
A glass object and video to show the dynamics between bird and birdwatcher on the Maarin Torni. The questions and discussions surrounding the piece are: 鈥淲ho captures whom?鈥, 鈥淒o we trap birds in our lenses or are we trapped within the birds鈥 path?鈥 and 鈥淐an the movement of the molten glass, birds and camera lenses be captured in a still artifact?鈥. I was both intrigued by the rhythms found at Maarin Torni and who would recognize each other between the birds and birdwatchers. The video shows both images of the glass work and the birds at Maarin Torni, it is best enjoyed looking through the artifact.
The artifact was created with two different hot glass techniques. The smaller colorful birds and the big transparent birds are flameworked, while the lens itself was blown by Zachary Compton and Slate Grove from my sketches and directions. Afterwards a small dremel was used to drill the holes to dispatch the smaller birds from, while a small ditch was created with the dremel to give the big birds feet a hold.
Special thanks to Mark茅ta Dolej拧ov谩, Zo毛 Robertson for the exceptional coaching, special thanks to Zachary Compton and Slate Grove for blowing the glass piece and special thanks to all the birds, birdwatchers and camera lenses that have co-created with me.
My Reflective diary was a handwritten book. I鈥檝e written down my thoughts and notes while working through a problem with the design and many pictures taken during the process. Giving visuals to my thoughts and reasoning for why some of the questions came to be. It was a dairy that was with me 24-7 and would have the thought out plans but also the 1-AM sleepy notes.
