Guidelines on the languages of the degrees and instruction
Guidelines on the languages of the degrees and instruction (in force from 1 January 2024)
At Aalto University, Finnish and English are languages of instruction and degree in the field of business, and Finnish, Swedish and English are languages of instruction and degree in the fields of art and technology. At the moment, the options for the language of degree in Aalto bachelor's and master's programmes are Finnish, Finnish/Swedish and English. The language of the degree defines the linguistic rights of students within the given programme.
Every course at Aalto has a set language of instruction and a set language (or languages) of study attainment:
To see the language of instruction for a particular course, see Additional information in Information sheet for the course. To see the languages of study attainment for a course, see the Basic information part of the Information sheet.
Study modules, such as majors and minors, have language(s) defined for them. The student may complete the module in a language indicated. Please note that a study module’s alternative studies may include courses that can be completed in some other language.
To see the language of study attainment for a study module, go to Classification section, or to or go via the Student Guide to your programme's pages to find majors and other study modules for your programme, For academic minors, see the menu option “” in the Student Guide.
The new language guidelines are being implemented in stages. The curriculum planning for the academic years from 2024 to 2026 will still be done largely according to the previous (2015) guidelines on the languages of instruction and degree.
Finnish or Finnish/Swedish bachelor's and master's programmes: The language of instruction and the language of study attainment is usually Finnish. In the fields of art and technology, Swedish is also used. The language of instruction for a programme’s elective or alternative studies may be Finnish, Swedish or English.
English bachelor's and master's programmes: The language of instruction and the language of study attainment is usually English.
Depending on your choice, you may complete a minor and elective studies in Finnish, Swedish or English.
For every course implementation, the language(s) used are indicated in and in the course syllabus. The first lecture of a course also usually goes through the practical arrangements and tells what language(s) will be used for teaching and for completing course work. Contact the course teacher if something about the language of instruction or language of study attainment remains unclear after the first session.
Matters related to completing a course are explained in the MyCourses workspace for the course and are usually reviewed during the first lecture. Contact the teacher if something remains unclear after the first session.
When a student’s course completion is entered into the student register, their language of study attainment is also entered. In a transfer of credit, the language of study attainment is entered if it appears in the official transcript of records.
Appended to degree certificates, transcripts of records indicate the language of study attainment used for each course. The language of degree is shown in the Diploma Supplement, which is also appended to the degree certificate.
Most master’s programmes are taught in English at the moment. All of the Aalto schools have master's degree courses that are taught and/or may be completed in Finnish or Swedish in the field of technology and arts and in Finnish in the field of business. Master's programme theses may be completed in Finnish or Swedish in the field of technology and arts and in Finnish in the field of business.
In line with the phased implementation plan for the languages of instruction and degree, the schools shall in 2024 specify the bachelor's and master's programmes in which, beginning in the 2026–2027 academic year, it will be possible to complete degrees mainly through studies organised in Finnish. In programmes in the technology and arts fields, the studies will be organised to allow their completion in Swedish as well. This endeavour is based in the areas of educational responsibility, which ensure that the language paths for education in Finland are implemented in the national languages of Finland.
