Aalto University is developing its campus as a unique and open collaboration hub. Aalto University encourages its students and staff to be actively engaged in society. The university’s statutory mission is to prepare students for an active and critical citizenship.

Distribution of election materials and campaigning is restricted to public outdoor areas

  • The immediate vicinity of university buildings must be kept free from election-related material.
  • No political material may be distributed in the lobbies or common indoor areas of university buildings. Election advertisements are not permitted on bulletin boards designated for communal use in the university. Only short-term notices and advertisements intended for the university community may be posted on these bulletin boards.
  • Separate instructions will be provided regarding communication and advertising related to the student union representative elections within university premises.
  • Election advertisements must not be visible or audible at advance voting or polling stations, as per election law restrictions. Harald Herlin Learning Centre (Otaniementie 9) will serve as the advance voting location for regional and municipal elections 2–4 April 2025

Advertising in university communication channels is prohibited

  • Aalto University's communication channels may only be used to inform about election events organized by the university or the student union.
  • University email, websites, or other media must not be used for election advertising.

Aalto University staff and students in elections

  • University staff members or students who are election candidates may lecture or appear in accordance with their normal duties. Candidates in elections may appear in university media (for example, websites) related to their work, studies, or research.
  • The Aalto University Code of Conduct states, ‘We understand our duty to be clear about whether we are acting in a personal or professional capacity in all our public activities.’ A university staff member who makes a public appearance in a campaign event of an individual candidate may refer to themselves using their job title and academic title, but they may not act as a representative of the university. This also applies to situations where staff members personally stand as candidates in parliamentary, municipal or European elections.
