Case 1 - Madesh and Sudurpaschim Province, Nepal

Addressing Disproportionate Impacts of Disasters on Women and Children's livelihood in Madhesh and Sudurpaschim Provinces.

Organisation

FCA Nepal

Location

Madesh and Sudurpaschim Province, Nepal

Theme

Settlement Responses, Climate Adaptation, Gender Equality

Madhesh and Sudurpaschim provinces in Nepal are increasingly vulnerable to climate-induced disasters such as floods, landslides, droughts, and fires. These crises disproportionately impact women and children, heightening health and safety risks, disrupting livelihoods and education, and exacerbating gender-based violence and psychosocial distress. As many men migrate for employment, women are left to manage both household and economic responsibilities, further intensifying their challenges.

Addressing these vulnerabilities requires innovative, sustainable solutions that strengthen resilience and promote gender equality. Simultaneously, disaster risk reduction efforts must prioritise the needs of vulnerable women and children. Enhancing shelter security, improving livelihood support, and integrating mental health care are key to building a more inclusive and effective approach to disaster management in Nepal.
