‘The Pathway programme helped me to build a foundation for my studies’

Why did you decide to apply to the University Pathway Finland programme?
I was eager to transition to another field and start a new career. Before applying to the Pathway programme, I had studied English literature and education and I was working in Cambodia as a Mandarin teacher. I also wanted to challenge myself, because I had been told that I was not good at science and mathematics back in my hometown and Computing and Electrical Engineering is considered a challenging programme. So, I thought, why not try anyway and see how it goes!
How was your experience with the University Pathway Finland programme?
It has been a very lovely, enjoyable journey. Even before I arrived in Finland, I had the chance to connect with my fellow students and make friends. That really helped me to transition to student life after working in another field for 4 years.
Did the University Pathway Finland programme prepare you for your studies in Finland?
Yes! I hadn’t studied mathematics for 7-8 years, so the chance to study mathematics courses before starting my bachelor's degree really helped me to build a foundation for my studies. I also had the chance to learn and practice Finnish with experienced Finnish teachers, which was very beneficial.
Another important thing I learned is self-study. Where I’m from, we study for the exams and there is a lot of cramming, but that is not the case in Finland. In Finland you must be proactive and self-study a lot. The Pathway programme really helped me with that and now I think it is the right way to study.
We also had a lot of groupwork and discussions that allowed us to exchange perspectives and ideas. That was new for me, but it prepared me for my studies at Tampere University, since we have a lot of groupwork here as well.
What are your plans for the future?
I am committed to completing my bachelor’s degree first. I also want to continue studying Finnish and become fluent in the next three years. I will probably get a job here. Additionally, I plan to immerse myself in the Finnish way of life, build connections and make friends and especially explore the beautiful culture and landscapes in Finland.
