Be(e) Involved: Making beekeeping on campus more accessible

This student-led initiative expands the Test-Site beekeeping project by adding new hives, building visibility with signboards, and providing shared tools and learning opportunities. It aims to make urban beekeeping more accessible to all students while strengthening the presence of pollinators on campus.

A group of students at Aalto University leads a beekeeping initiative at the Test Site, a student-led network promoting practical sustainability projects. Located near the Ossinlampi pond on Aalto University campus, the project initially started with two hives. Currently, the project has three active bee hives, engaging students from different departments as beekeeping hobbyists throughout the year.

The main goal of the initiative is to introduce fellow students to the world of honey bees and to foster a deeper understanding of the vital role pollinators play in ecosystems. By transforming the beekeeping site into an educational and inspiring space, the project creates opportunities for hands-on learning and ecological engagement.

As part of the project, the team replaced aging equipment with self-built wooden hives to move away from polystyrene components. They also installed a signboard to explain the project’s significance to passers-by and acquired additional tools to support the learning experience for visitors and students interested in studying bees. The project helped shape the site into an eco-cultural hub and fostered a growing community of bee enthusiasts on campus.
