Aalto Foodsharing is a student-led grassroot initiative to reduce food waste around and beyond the Aalto campus. The main activities include person-to-person food sharing at two community fridges, food pick-ups from collaboration partners and education about avoiding food waste.
The team is committed to developing Aalto Foodsharing by professionalizing actions and outreach and educating more students on food-related issues. The vision is to make Aalto University campus foodwaste-free and have every Aaltonian consider their part in food circulation. Beyond that, the goal is to act an example of effective Foodsharing action to grow a national movement and empower people to take local action to systemic problems.
A series of educational events expands the initiative’s impact: a fermentation workshop on ancestral preservation methods, a freeze-drying lab testing new technologies, an expert talk by a food scientist, and a visit to grassroots peer organization Dodo ry. These are complemented by community brunch events celebrating the collective effort and featuring a smoothie bike that lets participants blend fruit with pedal power.
By redistributing surplus food, supporting local systems, and advocating for systemic change, Aalto Foodsharing promotes a culture of sustainability grounded in equity, empowerment, and everyday action.
