Synergies between the Student Guide and the rest of aalto.fi

Learn about the main differences and similarities between news, event and article pages in the Student Guide and the rest of the site, and how to display content on automatic liftups.

If you are creating an article, a news or an event post for aalto.fi, you have to consider whether you are mainly targeting current students or the rest of aalto.fi users. This will have major implications in the visibility of your page on automatic liftups. One thing to remember, though, is that Student Guide content and the rest of aalto.fi pages can be displayed on any liftup if tagged accordingly. Student Guide automatic liftups do not restrict any content from outside of the Student Guide.

However, Student Guide news and events do not show on the overall listings at aalto.fi/news and aalto.fi/events by default. This adjustment is made on purpose considering that the high amount of content created for the Student Guide would easily take over those listings. Only if deemed extremely important for the rest of aalto.fi users, editors can activate a toggle to make the page visible on the before-mentioned listings.

Drupal toggles for Student Guide content with descriptions. Both switches are turned off.
Student Guide editors will primarily mark pages as Student Guide. In addition, 'Student Guide public' will make those pages visible on aalto.fi/news and aalto.fi/events overall listings.

For Student Guide editors

If you are a Student Guide editor, you are probably creating content for current students. Your page will be branded as Student Guide, showcasing a tailor-made ribbon. Don't forget to activate the toggle at the bottom of the page. Other than that, just tag the page appropriately so that it shows in relevant automatic liftups across aalto.fi.

How to add news to the Student Guide (in Finnish only)

For the rest of aalto.fi editors

If you are not a Student Guide editor and you are creating aalto.fi-wide content, you do not have to do anything different just because of the inclusion of the Student Guide on aalto.fi. If you want your pages to be displayed on the Student Guide automatic liftups, the tagging will have to be complementary with that of the liftup. Basically, just tag it like any other piece of information at aalto.fi making sure the content contains the relevant metadata.

FAQ

Do I need to create two separate pages for the same content?
No. Just create one page and tag it appropriately so that it shows on the relevant automatic liftups whether it is inside or outside the Student Guide.

Can I have a Student Guide page visible in automatic liftups in both the Student Guide and the rest of aalto.fi?
Yes. Student Guide news, events and article pages can be displayed throughout aalto.fi automatic liftups as long as they include the relevant tags.

Can I have a page (without the Student Guide ribbon) visible in the Student Guide automatic liftups?
Yes. The Student Guide do not restrict any content in their automatic liftups. Make sure your page is appropriately tagged if you want to showcase it in a specific automatic liftup.

Can I have a Student Guide news or event page displayed in the overall listings at aalto.fi/news and aalto.fi/events?
Yes. However, remember that Student Guide news and events are by default left out of aalto.fi/news and aalto.fi/events listings. If you want your Student Guide content to be displayed there, you will have to activate the toggle at the bottom of the page.

I am not a Student Guide editor but my page is mainly meant for students. Do I have to add the Student Guide ribbon?
It depends. If you want your page to have the Student Guide brand, then add the ribbon. Keep in mind that if you do that, the page will not show on aalto.fi/news and aalto.fi/events listings (unless you activate the toggle at the bottom of the page).
