Head of Doctoral Studies

Aalto Doctoral Program in Business Economics and Finance offers research training in twelve (12) different disciplines, organized around units and departments. Each of these disciplines has appointed a designated Head of Doctoral studies who is responsible for leading and coordinating the doctoral program -related curricular activities of the discipline.

Core Responsibilities of the Head of Doctoral Studies (HDS)

The core responsibilities of the Head of Doctoral Studies (HDS) include:

  1. Leading and coordinating discipline specific doctoral studies: Leading and coordinating the development and delivery of discipline-specific research training together with the professors of the unit or department.
  2. Student recruitment and admissions: Administering the processes of recruitment and admission of new doctoral students in the unit or department. Developing marketing material and promoting the Aalto BIZ doctoral program through appropriate communication and media channels as needed.
  3. Overseeing supervisory arrangements: Ensuring that adequate supervisory arrangements are in place, from recruitment to completion, in the unit or department. Supporting dissertation advisory teams and committees with information, advice, and training as appropriate.
  4. Monitoring student progress: Ensuring that adequate progress review arrangements are in place for the doctoral students of the unit or department. Liaising with dissertation supervisors regarding student progress to ensure timely completion and submission of dissertations. Ensuring that appropriate action is taken in cases where student progress is unsatisfactory.
  5. Student induction. Organizing the induction of new doctoral students and establishing cohort development activities and integration with the wider community of Aalto BIZ doctoral students.
  6. Conflict resolution: Taking responsibility and timely action to resolve disputes and difficulties that possibly arise between students and their dissertation advisors
  7. Program development: Contributing to the continuous development of the doctoral program of Aalto School of Business. Participating in the biannual program development meetings with the Doctoral Program Committee.
  8. Promoting wellbeing and high-quality student experience: Actively promoting student wellbeing, engagement and high-quality student experience in Aalto BIZ doctoral program. Contributing to the collective creation of meaningful and stimulating work environment and creating opportunities for doctoral students to connect with their peers, faculty and the doctoral program.
  9. Encouraging and enabling student participation: Ensuring that appropriate structures and feedback mechanisms are in place to facilitate student involvement and influence in the unit and department. Promoting an inclusive, low-hierarchy organizational culture with empowered students (in line with the strategic goals of Aalto BIZ).
  10. Overseeing policy implementation: Overseeing the implementation of the strategies, policies and initiatives of the Doctoral Program Committee and Academic Committee of Aalto BIZ in the unit or department.
