Scientific and Artistic Advisory Boards (SAB, SAAB)

The Scientific (and Artistic) Advisory Boards (S(A)AB) of our schools have an important function in supporting the development of the university.
Accounting Impact

The S(A)AB groups support and make recommendations on the new development trends and openings of the schools and assess the effectiveness of development measures.

Tasks of the S(A)AB groups

- to monitor, review and support school's research, artistic activities and teaching, so that the main focus is on research,
- to give recommendations on new developments and openings of the school
- to evaluate the effectiveness and impact of development actions.

Each scientific or artistic advisory group meets approximately every three years, except for the years in which a more comprehensive and in-depth evaluation of research, art and impact (RAI) assessment is held.

S(A)AB visits have been organised in 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2021 and 2024.

During the 2021 visit, particular attention was paid to how the university's strategy and plans reflect Aalto University's new strategy and how the universities and institutions have responded to the recommendations they received in the RAI2018 evaluation.

In the review of 2024, the special task of the advisory groups was to provide critical, forward-looking observations and recommendations on the topics selected by the universities and institutions. The discussions covered many topics, such as doctoral training, collaboration, diversity, recruitment and research infrastructures.

The material for the 2021 and 2024 visits are found (for Aalto personell) at

The contact persons of the S(A)AB process are the development managers at each school, and a university level contact person is Head of planning Marja Niemi, marja.niemi@aalto.fi.
