Official steps towards the publishing of doc. thesis and defence at CHEM
- Doctoral student finalises thesis and the last publication has been submitted to the journal for peer-review. Supervising professor contacts the two suggested pre-examiners and confirms their availability for the task, and ask for their CV & publications.
- Thesis manuscript and all publications submitted to DPC 10 days before the meeting (see DPC schedule link above)
- DPC approves the two pre-examiners and quality of thesis manuscript for the pre-exam. process (1st decision)
- Pre-examiners are given 4 weeks time to submit their statement and grading table
- After 5-6 weeks from the DPC meeting, student must reflect and address with great care all the given comments and suggestions (correction report & tracked changes) finalizing the thesis according the pre-examiners' views. Supervising professor must check and approve all the corrections. Note the importance of grading tables, if any of boxes has "fail", the thesis must be corrected and sent to second pre-examination round, this requires DPC meeting decision.
- DPC meeting (2nd decision) decides if the corrections are adequat and right to publish can be granted. Defence form (opponent, date, time, hall) can be approved at same PDC meeting.
- Defence can be arranged to take place 28-30 days after the DPC meeting which made the decision of "right to publish" and "approved opponent & date". Printed and electronic thesis must be publicly available 7 days before the defence date.
- After the defence, opponent must submit a written report of defence and thesis, attached with grading table. Only after these both are available, DPC meeting (3rd decision) can approve the thesis, and student can be granted with D.Sc. degree by dean's decision.
- After degree granting decision, degree will be registered and eventually new graduate will receive an email link for electronic degree certificate. Starting from 1 August 2025, Aalto University graduates receive electronic degree certificates.
