Ville Vuorinen appointed Assistant Professorat Aalto University
Ville Vuorinen (b. 1979), D.Sc. (Tech.) has been appointed as Assistant Professor in Energy Technology at the Aalto University School of Engineering, Department of Energy Technology from 1 September 2014 to 31 August 2019.
Vuorinen's field of research is computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in energy technology. The research field is multidisciplinary including, e.g., computational physics and chemistry of combustion. The key research method is a simulation approach called-eddy simulation (LES). LES is a high resolution method for accurate prediction of unsteadiness of turbulent, swirling flows. Special research topics include low-temperature and lean combustion techniques, which can significantly decrease emissions, e.g., in gas engines or power plants.
- This field of research represents fundamental science important to the department. The research methods can be extensively utilised in various applications of combustion technology and heat transfer and thus improve the efficiency of energy production, transfer and consumption, says Professor Risto Lahdelma, head of the Department of Energy Technology.
Previous research by Ville Vuorinen has encompassed a wide area of fluid mechanics, and he has published a number of peer-reviewed articles, e.g., on numerical methods applicable to simulating turbulence, compressible flows, supersonic flows, fuel sprays and multiphase flows. Computational research has been conducted in close collaboration with experimental research.
Vuorinen has outstanding international networks and he has collaborated, e.g., with KTH, TU Delft and Lund University. On the national level, Vuorinen has maintained active cooperation with CSC - IT Center for Science, which has provided computational resources for the research. Vuorinen has actively developed the OpenFOAM open source software and organised basic courses on the topic in cooperation with CSC. Vuorinen's teaching at Aalto is connected to, e.g., heat transfer, turbulence simulation methods and thermodynamics.
In 2013, Academy of Finland granted Vuorinen funding for three years for research on Numerical Simulation of Compressible Fuel Jets in Hot Environments and Modal Analysis.
Vuorinen graduated as Master of Science (Technology) from the Department of Technical Physics and Mathematics at the Helsinki University of Technology in 2004 and earned his doctorate in the field of computational fluid mechanics (CFD) from the Department of Energy Technology in 2010. His doctoral thesis (LES of Certain Droplet Size Effects in Fuel Sprays), with distinction, dealt with modelling diesel fuel sprays with LES method using OpenFOAM.
