Viima - Puumiehenkuja 5 gets a name that invites adventure

The building's users wanted an official name for the building and began to look for suitable names together. The official name of the building has been the street address Puumiehenkuja 5, and in recent years, K3 has been widely used as an unofficial name.

The new name Viima celebrates a new beginning for the building, which is home to, among others, research groups of the School of Engineering, Department Machine Hall of the School of Electrical Engineering, Aalto Design Factory, Startup Sauna, and Aalto Ventures Program. Between 2021 and 2022, one wing of Viima was renovated and another wing was rebuilt, after which new users also moved into the building. The main users of the building gathered after the move to discuss the official name.

Constructed in 1968, Viima was previously known as Puumiehenkuja 5, as the university uses the street address as the name in the absence of an official name. The building has previously been referred to by names such as Konetekniikka 3 and K3. With the president's decision, Viima was confirmed as the new name of the building following the discussions around the options that arose.

Trailblazer with an abundance of speed

Viima refers to a gust of wind that you feel on your face when moving swiftly. As a name, it fits the style of the names of nearby buildings (Kide, Marsio, V盲re) and communicates speed, direction and adventure. The different actors in the building can align with these themes. The name is in Finnish, but it is also easy for non-Finnish speakers to pronounce.

Various events, such as workshops, hackathons, and student project exhibitions, are often held in the Viima building. Additionally, it offers spaces for a wide range of actors, from Aalto University students and staff to external companies and communities. Viima is designed to promote innovation and collaboration through a multidisciplinary environment, bringing together new ideas, high-performing researchers, and knowledge-sharing students.
