Student Maleeha Maqbool is planning to start her own manufacturing startup after graduating

Maleeha Maqbool had already worked eight years in manufacturing industry in her home country Pakistan before starting the Master’s programme. Experiencing two different cultures and manufacturing practices both in Aalto University, Finland and Trento University, Italy has been the best part of her studies so far.

How did you find out about the programme? What made you choose it?
As I was already working in manufacturing before starting my Master’s degree, I would check out EIT Manufacturing's blog regularly and one day I saw the call for application for a Master’s degree sponsored by EIT Manufacturing and applied for it. The reason for taking a break from work and applying for a Master’s degree was to get more in-depth knowledge about latest manufacturing practices, and what better place to do it, but in Europe in a programme that allows to experience the technological practices in two different European countries.

Describe your experience with the application process. Any tips for future applicants?
The application process was very simple. You just need to have all documents at hand and be able to write a cover letter that talks about your passion for the field you're interested in studying more about. Since my programme has a strong focus on entrepreneurship, it's preferred if you already have an entrepreneurial idea, that you're interested in pursuing entrepreneurship professionally in the future.

What kind of other international experience did you have before?

I have worked for 8 years in the manufacturing industry in Pakistan.

What is unique about this programme?

In my opinion, being able to experience two different cultures and the respective manufacturing practices in these countries is a unique experience that offers more opportunities to network and make new friends.

What have you liked the most about this programme so far?

The Intra-European experience, working with people from all over the world, learning about the newest trends in manufacturing.

What is special about each university where you have studied in this programme, according to your current experience?

Aalto University has really nice activities for students that help in personality development. It was in Aalto that I was able to explore my passions for flying, sailing and pistol shooting among other student-centered activities. On the other hand, Trento University is set in a beautiful, picturesque environment that also has the charm of a historical small Italian town.

What are you looking forward to?

Starting my own manufacturing startup after graduating.

What is special about each university where you have studied in this programme, according to your current experience?

My favourite course to study was Manufacturing Methods that I took at Aalto, because in Pakistan, my home country, I was exposed to very conventional manufacturing technologies, but in this course, I was able to acquaint myself with the latest, cutting-edge technologies in the European industry.

For whom would you recommend this?

Everyone out there who wants to learn about the latest trends in manufacturing while having tons of fun!

Any other greetings?

Don't forget to have fun - it's as important as getting good grades! ;)
