Pilot project Learning Lounge brings more flexible use of campus space

In the Jakamisella viisautta (JAVIST) workshop earlier this year, the aim was to advance the idea of using campus restaurants as flexible spaces for studying and working. This vision is now becoming a reality with the launch of the first pilot project in collaboration with Compass Group at the TUAS restaurant on Maarintie 8. During the trial period from April 1 to June 5, 2025, the restaurant space will be open for use by students, staff, and visitors after lunch hours.

The JAVIST project aims to create inspiring and flexible environments that promote collaboration, knowledge sharing, and the development of innovations. Its goal is to develop new, efficient operational models that support companies, research institutions, and educational organizations, while optimizing the use of space. In addition to ACRE and Aalto University, the project also involves the University of Helsinki and the City of Helsinki.

Bringing spaces to life 鈥 for studying and socializing

The Learning Lounge pilot brings a range of benefits, adding flexibility and offering alternatives to traditional work and learning environments. At the same time, it strengthens the campus community by providing students with more places to work on group projects, study independently, and grab a snack. By opening the dining area more broadly to the community, the initiative encourages interaction between students and staff from different fields and supports sustainable development by making use of existing spaces.

The pilot enlivens the restaurant space, attracts new visitors, and increases the visibility of the TUAS restaurant beyond regular lunch hours. To improve usability, additional power outlets have been installed to allow for device charging. Use of the space is based on mutual respect and flexibility. Since the area is not soundproof, confidential conversations should be held elsewhere. The space is also not monitored, so leaving personal belongings is at your own risk. Our goal is to offer an open, comfortable, and versatile environment for studying, working, and meeting others.

The restaurant space is open during weekdays from 14:00鈥19:30 after lunch service, except when reserved for private events. The restaurant will also launch the Market 24/7 concept, providing a wide selection of snacks and drinks on a self-service basis. You can even start your day with breakfast鈥擱estaurant TUAS serves breakfast on weekdays from 8:00鈥9:45.

Next steps

At ACRE we will monitor how this new approach to space usage impacts campus life, fosters a sense of community, and meets students' needs. 鈥淲e鈥檙e collecting user feedback and evaluating how well the space and services function so we can refine the concept and expand it to other campus areas in collaboration with our stakeholders. Our goal is to create even better ways to make effective and responsible use of campus resources,鈥 says the pilot project leader Susanna Aspia from ACRE.

"We鈥檙e excited to be part of the campus restaurant pilot. Restaurant spaces are often underutilized outside of lunch hours, and now we have the opportunity to offer an alternative space for both work and learning. I believe the versatility and adaptability of restaurant spaces will become increasingly important in the future, and it鈥檚 essential for all of us to learn from this pilot as we plan the next Learning Lounge," says Anu Tallgr茅n Senior Manager, Concession accounts at Compass Group.

*The sharing economy and the smart use of resources support the objectives of sustainability and sustainable development. The JAVIST project will build significant learning environments for the future and develop the metropolitan ecosystem. The project is co-funded by the EU. For more information:
