New faces and sustainable development – School of Engineering Annual Review 2019

The school advances sustainable development through research and teaching, master's degree and doctoral graduates enjoy high employment rates.

Dean Gary Marquis presented the School of Engineering Annual Review 2019 at Dean's Coffee, held at Dipoli on 31 January 2020. The annual review looked at the past year in light of metrics, statistics and highlights.

Appointments

During the year, the School of Engineering welcomed five new professors, who strengthened each department's group of experts in their fields of study.

In addition to new professors, 2019 appointments included some new titles for familiar people. Water and environmental engineering Professor Olli Varis was appointed Aalto Distinguished Professor, while Panu Sainio, whose duties include the Aalto Works project, was appointed the school's technology manager.

Professor Olli Varis of the Department of Built Environment, School of Engineering, has been appointed Aalto Distinguished Professor. The title is awarded to professors of exceptional academic merit.

Sainio's responsibilities include the development of the school's Technical Support Services and the Aalto Works block in association with the future users of the block as well as Aalto Campus & Real Estate (ACRE).

The five central sustainable development goals for the School of Engineering.

Sustainable development goals

Aalto University became the first Finnish university to commit to advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals as part of its teaching, research, innovation activities, and campus development.

In the professors' seminar held in the spring of 2019, the School of Engineering identified five SDGs in which the school's teaching and research has the most significant impact.

Degree education statistics

    School of Engineering Dean's List 2014-2019

    A total of 197 students received the Dean's List commendation for their studies during academic year 2018-2019. Conditions for inclusion on the Dean's List include at least 60 credits completed during an academic year with an average grade of at least 4.0.

    Completed doctoral degrees, School of Engineering 2011-2019

    In 2019, a total of 45 doctoral degrees were completed at the School of Engineering.

    Changing campus

    The year 2019 also included many changes to the school's campus. The Puumies block saw a number of renovations both in- and outdoors, and the human-centred living environment-focused Living+ Hub was opened at Rakentajanaukio 4.

    The Living+ Hub is an experimental space for research, development and innovations activities connecting researchers, students, companies and cities.

    The International Water Mist Association’s Young Talent Award 2019 to Topi Sikanen, D.Sc.

    Sikanen was awarded for his doctoral thesis 'Simulation of Transport, Evaporation and Combustion of Liquids in large-scale Fire Incidents'.

    Aalto University students win innovation competition with autonomous hoist

    Students turned a regular indoor hoist into a robot with artificial intelligence.

    The grants were presented at the Aalto Civil Engineering Day event hosted by the Department of Civil Engineering on 7 March 2019.
