The City of Espoo and Aalto University signed an extension agreement on strategic partnership today, 16 June 2020. The agreement expands cooperation established between Espoo and Aalto that has already brought good results. The previous agreements have been in force since 2012.

Through their cooperation, Espoo and Aalto want to find ways to build a more sustainable world both locally and globally. As part of the international leadership programme for forerunner cities, Espoo is committed to achieving the UN goals for sustainable development by 2025. Aalto University was the first university in Finland to commit to promoting these goals.

Aalto University and Espoo are striving to develop more attractive environments for living, work, research, and teaching, as well as for culture and innovation. Another goal is to create a viable growth platform for entrepreneurship and business and to reinforce the attractiveness and staying power of the area among international specialists. Espoo and Aalto University want to inspire and encourage creativity and experimentation with new kinds of solutions in their communities.

The field of cooperation is wide, containing themes related to research, education, health care, urban planning, construction, events, and service design.
