Department of Energy and Mechanical Engineering is the new name of the Department of Mechanical Engineering
As part of the living strategy of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, there has been a change to its name. The new name is a result of the process of organisational revision implemented at the School of Engineering during 2023–2024.
'Several options were considered, and we decided to proceed with developing the name of the Department of Mechanical Engineering,' said Professor Pedro Vilaça, head of the department. 'This new name is a more effective and impactful way to communicate the department's identity and field of study.'
The new name of the department in English, Finnish, and Swedish is:
- Department of Energy and Mechanical Engineering
- Energia- ja konetekniikan laitos
- Institutionen för energi- och maskinteknik
By including the word energy, the new name is a better reflection of the work conducted at the department, not only in topics like energy conversion and energy systems, but also due to the role of energy in mechanical engineering phenomena and systems.
The name was approved in a meeting of the department's professors on 7 October 2024, and introduced to all department personnel at the department meeting of 9 October 2024. The new name was registered in the bylaws of the School of Engineering on 11 October 2024.
