An illustration with a graph on the left and a molecular structure inset in a cube on the right. Each curve on the graph is a different colour, and each is connected by a line to an inset circle with a specific molecular feature corresponding to that curve. Above the cube with the molecular structure is a squigly arrow coming in, labelled "hv", and a straight arrow going out, labelled "e-". The entire figure (graph and inset cube) is labelled "XPS".

Perpetual motion is possible – Scientists at Aalto University’s Low Temperature Lab observed the interaction of two time-crystals that bend the laws of physics

Time-crystals are a phase of matter in which the particles more in a perpetually repeating cycle with no external input of energy. Researchers were able to create two time-crystals at Aalto University’s Low Temperature Lab and observe their interaction. In the future, time-crystals might have applications in devices such as quantum computer memory components.

An atomic-scale window into superconductivity paves the way for new quantum materials

Researchers have demonstrated a new technique to measure the quantum excitations in superconducting materials with atomic precision for the first time. Detecting these excitations is an important step towards understand exotic superconductors, which could help us improve quantum computers and perhaps even pave the way towards room-temperature superconductors.

A new research project is the first to investigate whether discrimination based on ethnicity occurs in the Finnish mortgage market

In the United States, for example, citizens from ethnic minorities pay more for their mortgages than others, even if there are no differences in creditworthiness. Furthermore, minority members’ loan applications are rejected more often – even when the decision is made by an algorithm. According to the researcher in charge of the new project, corresponding discrimination would, in the Finnish setting, cause economic inequality with long-term impacts
