The conferment, held every six years, celebrates highly educated professionals in the fields of art and design combining academic traditions with creativity. It is also an opportunity to network and together shape the traditions and future of our community. As the world moves towards increasingly unpredictable times, there is a greater need than ever for comprehensive, boundary-breaking creative expertise and problem-solving skills!

The theme for the June 2025 conferment is Species. We celebrate life in all its limitless forms, from biological to artificial, from organisms to objects, from currents to organizations, all intertwined in our shared world. The opportunity to participate as a master or doctor is unique. The ceremony week promises traditions, unforgettable encounters, and experiences in the spirit of the School of Arts, design and Architecture.

You are warmly welcome to join the celebration!

What is the Ceremonial Conferment of Degrees?

The conferment is a festive event with long-standing traditions at Aalto University and its predecessors. In all Finnish universities, these traditions trace back to medieval Europe with the establishment of the first modern universities in Italy and France. Today, Finnish universities are globally unique in maintaining the tradition of the graduation ceremony.

During the conferment, doctors and masters are inaugurated as members of the academic community. The symbols of inauguration are the doctoral hat for doctors and the wreath for masters, which they receive in the presence of professors and honorary doctors. The act, known as the conferment ceremony, traditionally includes speeches, musical performances, and a celebratory procession that opens and closes the event. The conferment festivities continue with a dinner and ball, featuring both traditional dances and contemporary music.

In addition to the conferment ceremony and evening celebration, the ceremony week includes other traditions and activities such as the master's wreath weaving, the doctors' robe signing, the honorary doctors' panel discussion, and the conferment brunch.

The theme for the 2025 Conferment is Species.

We celebrate life in all its limitless forms, from biological to artificial, from organisms to objects, from streams to organizations, intertwining in our shared world. The theme ties together the topics of events during the ceremony week and is reflected in the art program, among other things.

For the 2025 graduation ceremony, you can participate in all events for a combined fee of €150 (per person) or only attend the free events (the conferment ceremony and the honorary doctors' panel). Pre-register to stay informed about communications related to the conferment. Pre-registration does not obligate you to participate in the event. Official registration with payment will open later in the spring. â€¯
