Why is this important?

The credit plan (referred to as "study plan" in Sisu) is a tool for planning your studies and registering for courses. In addition, it forms the basis for your degree certificate. The following are the most important basics of the Sisu study plan and its role in the different stages of doctoral studies. Technical instructions for making the plan can be found below.

What do I need to know when...

How do I create a study plan in Sisu?

  1. Log in to Sisu at .
  2. From the top bar / menu choose the Structure of studies tab.
  3. Create a new study plan by clicking  the New study plan button.
  • Choose your doctoral programme under My educations.
  • Curriculum period: select the academic year in which you started your studies
    • You can check the start date of your doctoral degree study right in Sisu (My profile> Study rights > your doctoral programme > Valid starting from).
    • For example, if you started in the spring of 2024, select the 2023-2024 academic year.
    • If you started several years ago and have since changed your research field or transferred to a new degree structure, select the academic year in which the change took place.
  • Give the plan a name of your choice. The name is not printed on the transcript of records and can be changed.
  • Check whether your current research field appeared in the plan and that it says "Selection confirmed to the study right". If the research field did not appear, first make sure that you have completed all the steps according to the instructions given above and try to create a new plan template. If you still can't make your research field visible, contact your doctoral programme. Please note that for new students, it may take a few days after the study right has been created before the research field appears in your study right in Sisu.
  • Now the study plan template is ready and the structure should look like this:

    General Research Studies

    Research Field Studies
Your own research field module, e.g. Space Science and Technology ELEC008Z

    Doctoral Thesis

    Extracurricular Studies

  • Under the Doctoral Thesis module, add the code of your own doctoral thesis module (follows the research field code, e.g. ELEC008Z.diss)
  • You can now add courses to the template by following these steps.

How do I add content?

First, familiarize yourself with the curriculum and possible other instructions by your doctoral programme. They provide you with more information on which study module each course is placed in. Place the courses that are not part of your degree (e.g. extra language courses) in the section "Extracurricular studies".

There are a few basic steps to adding content:

  • Selection assistant: Click on the heading of the study module (e.g. "General research studies"), the selection assistant opens on the right side of the page. In the basic window you will see a list of courses that you can  select from the degree structure to the module in question. Please note that the courses for the Research Field Studies are placed under the name of your research field, not directly under the heading "Research Field Studies"  .
  • If you want to include other studies (not listed in the selection assistant), there may be different ways to do this (depending on the doctoral programme and the curriculum period).
    • In some cases, you can activate the subheading "Other courses" in the selection assistant of the module and then place any courses you have agreed with your supervising professor under it.
    • "Add a course to the  study plan": You can use this open search field in the selection assistant.
    • If you don't see the above option, you can activate the "free edit mode" and search for courses from there.
  • If you want to include studies that have already been completed (at Aalto), you can:
    1. Use the Add to the plan -tab on the left side of your plan. Add the completed course to the plan by clicking the arrow next to its name. Select which study module you want to include it to. Finally, confirm your selection in the selection assistant.
    2. Switch the selection assistant window to the free edit mode via the three dots in the upper right corner.
  • If you want to include studies completed at other universities, add a study draft to the correct module. See more information on Credit transfer.

If you're having trouble adding content to your plan, see below for more help. Below, we have collected the most common problem situations and their solutions. If you cannot find a solution below, please contact your doctoral programme. With technical issues you can also turn to sisu@aalto.fi

When should the modules of the study plan be approved?

Sisu's notifications often seem to imply that approval for the modules of your plan would be needed at the beginning of the studies. However this is not the case and the "approval required" notifications can be ignored at this stage. As a rule, approval for modules is applied for only when the preliminary examination is approaching and when the final content of your degree has been confirmed. See the beginning of the page for more information on this.
