Technology Sector Finnish

Technology sector Finnish is conducted in the English-language Bachelor of Science and Technology program in years 2025-2027. In the project, we will develop a Finnish language module that will be integrated into an English-language bachelor's degree in technology and introduce new courses to the Aalto University Language Centre. The course will enable students to reach a B1 level proficiency in the Finnish language, and provides them with language counceling. The Aalto sub-project is part of the project "Linguistic competence pathways for immigrants in labour shortage sectors in the Helsinki metropolitan area" coordinated by the University of Helsinki and co-funded by the European Union.

Preliminary program description and course content

In the Tekniikan alan suomi program, students will achieve a basic level of Finnish language proficiency (B1). The program focuses on vocabulary and language use situations that are particularly relevant in the technology sector. Students will learn to communicate in simple everyday situations and in situations typical in their studies and in working life, as well as in slightly more challenging situations when they receive support. During the program, students will build a portfolio that they can use when seeking employment. Students will develop strategies to continue learning Finnish in their everyday life, studies and work.

Intended learning outcomes

By the end of the program, students will be able to...

  • have an informal conversation in Finnish at the workplace
  • describe their work in Finnish
  • follow daily events in Finland
  • understand texts related to entrepreneurship and business management
  • apply for jobs in Finnish
  • form connections with their professional network
  • work on projects in teams (partially in Finnish)
  • utilize strategies to continue learning Finnish in their Master’s studies and work life

  • Tekniikan alan suomi 4 (3 op): job search and working life: companies and start-ups

  • Tekniikan alan suomi 5 (3 op): Future society: environment and sustainable development, population challenges, future technologies

A language-supported study path enhances technology students' employability

Higher education institutions in the Helsinki metropolitan area are working together to develop language-aware teaching. The Aalto sub-project focuses on the technology sector. It integrates Finnish as a second language studies into an English-language bachelor's degree. Students will receive language-related counseling. Content studies will be integrated in collaboration with technology teachers.

Tekniikan alan suomi käynnistyi opiskelijoille pitsatapahtumassa

Aalto-yliopiston Tekniikan alan suomi -hanke käynnistyi opiskelijoille eilen (6.5.2025), kun opiskelijat ja henkilökuntaa kokoontui yhteiseen orientaatio- ja pitsatilaisuuteen. Tekniikan alan suomi on Bachelor of Science and Technology -ohjelman ensimmäisen vuoden opiskelijoille räätälöity Euroopan unionin osarahoittama pilottiprojekti, jossa tuetaan opiskelijoiden työllistymistä suomen kielen opintojen ja uraohjauksen avulla.
