Board

The Aalto University Board decides on the strategy, operation and financial issues and is responsible for any far-reaching plans.

The Aalto University Board consists of seven members. Tero Ojanperä is chair and Marita Niemelä is vice chair. Other members of the board are: Tiina Alahuhta-Kasko, Mariana Amatullo, Karel Luyben, Andreas Mortensen and Hanna Sievinen.

The board members are appointed by the Aalto University Academic Affairs Committee. The members represent a wide spectrum of sciences and arts, as well as the best social and industrial expertise on both national and international levels.

Tero Ojanperä, Chair

Tero Ojanperä, DSc (Tech), is the founder of Rando Labs and a professional board member in several companies. He is a member of the board in OP Financial Group and Miltton, and he is an investor, board member, and advisor in many startup companies. Tero Ojanperä is a co-founder and served as CEO and chair of Silo AI. Between 1998 and 2011 he held several managerial positions in Nokia Corporation.  He was chair of the board at Tampere University of Technology from 2012 to 2018.

Marita Niemelä, Vice Chair

Marita Niemelä, DSc (Tech), leads Rejlers Finland’s division focused on sustainable energy solutions. Previously, she was director of the energy business unit at CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency and innovation catalyst, and has held leading positions at Neste Engineering Solutions, Valmet, Metso and Pöyry. In 2009–2011, she served as part-time professor at Aalto University. Niemelä has been board member in Academy of Finland and the Finnish Bioeconomy Cluster FIBIC and advisory board member in VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland.

Tiina Alahuhta-Kasko

Tiina Alahuhta-Kasko

Tiina Alahuhta-Kasko, MSc (Econ), is President and CEO of Marimekko Corporation, where she has held a number of leadership positions since 2005. She sits on the board of Kesko and the Climate Leadership Coalition. Tiina Alahuhta-Kasko is a member of the IMD Business School Foundation Board, Vice Chair of the Aalto University Student Union Honorary Delegation and a Business Fellow of the Finnish Business and Policy Forum EVA. 

Mariana Amatullo

Mariana Amatullo

Mariana Amatullo is professor of strategic design & management at Parsons School of Design, the New School, where she has occupied a series of vice provost roles since joining the institution in 2017. Amatullo has pioneering experience of integrating creative fields into international development programmes and executive education. Her scholarship and consulting intersect between the fields of management and design for social innovation. She is Honorary President of the Cumulus Association of Art and Design Education and Research and serves on a variety of international panels and advisory boards dedicated to the arts and design.

Karel Luyben

Karel Ch. A. M. Luyben

Karel Luyben is professor of biochemical engineering in the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. He has previously worked at the university as rector magnificus, dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences and as scientific director of the Graduate School Biotechnological Sciences Delft Leiden. He provides industry and government with consultation in the areas of technology, innovation and industrial policies.

Andreas Mortensen

Professor Andreas Mortensen is Vice President of research and professor in the Institute of Materials at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland. He currently serves as the Director General of the EU FET Flagship Human Brain Project.  Prior to joining EPFL he was a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Professor Mortensen has been a member of various high-level expert groups, research and scientific councils, and foundations, for Europe and other organisations.

Hanna Sievinen

Hanna Sievinen, DSc (Econ), is a professional board member in several companies and organisations, and she is Vice Chair and Chair of the Audit Committee in the board of Taaleri Oyj and Vice Chair in the board of Koskisen Corporation, and board member in Sofigate among others. She began serving as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of VR Group Plc as well as Chair of the Audit Committee on 10 April 2025. Between 2000 and 2014, she held several managerial positions at Nokia Corporation in many countries. She also works as an independent corporate advisor and holds several positions of trust.

Management

The executive bodies of the university are the Board (AUFB), the President, and the University Academic Affairs Committee (AAC). The President's Management Team (PMT) coordinates the daily work at the university and the preparation of pre-decision motions. The Aalto Management Team (AMT) furthers transparency and open dialogue in decision-making regarding university development.
