Aalto University Summer School

Safety in Finland and on campus

Finland consistently ranks as one of the safest countries in the world. Participating in a summer course by Aalto University Summer School is an easy and safe way to experience a new country and culture while learning something new.

Aalto University actively maintains comprehensive security procedures tailored to different situations, ensuring a safe environment for students, staff, and visitors.

Finland is a great place to live. Multiple times voted the happiest country in the world, it is a safe, politically stable, and well-organized Nordic society where equality and work-life balance are highly valued and corruption is low.

Getting around is effortless and safe

Aalto University campus is located in Espoo, within walking distance of the beautiful sea and nature trails. The campus can be reached easily from Helsinki in 10 minutes by metro.

It's not uncommon to be able to walk outside even late at night, thanks to low crime rates and a strong sense of community. You can wear your valuables as you would normally. Evenings and nights remain bright in July, but when the evenings darken in August, street lighting is switched on across cities and throughout campus.

Healthcare services

In case of an emergency, you have the right to receive urgent medical care anywhere in the Finnish public health system. Urgent medical care refers to the immediate assessment and treatment required, for example, in the case of sudden illness, injury or worsening of a long-term illness.

If you fall ill during your stay and need to see a doctor or nurse, you can quickly and easily access private healthcare with your travel insurance.

There are several different private healthcare providers in Finland. One of the largest providers has a healthcare clinic on Aalto University campus and in many more locations around the area.

In case of emergency

In emergencies, call the emergency number 112. An ambulance or medical helicopter will be dispatched if necessary. You can also install the 112 Suomi application free-of-charge on your smartphone to indicate your location to the Emergency Response Centre.

Designated Aalto University staff available throughout your Summer School stay

Each summer, we expand the Aalto University Summer School team by hiring a team of Program Assistants, with the primary objective of securing students an unforgettable, fun, and safe Summer School experience. The Program Assistants can be reached Monday through Friday during office hours.

Tommaso Astaldi participated in the Nordic Product Design course by Aalto University Summer School in summer 2024.

'I would warmly recommend taking any course at Summer School as a convenient and fun way to change your surroundings and experience something new. There is no need to be nervous for not being a very experienced traveller – the summer school staff has been great in their support before and during the course.'
