Solutions for sustainability
We create solutions for sustainability by combining our strengths.Â
Radical creativity means courageous, broad-minded, and experimental activities in co-creation of new solutions and competency for gaining innovative development in rapidly evolving situations.
Entrepreneurial mindset is an attitude to approach challenges and problems as opportunities and to see the research results as potential basis for user-centric development of solutions.
Solutions for Sustainability means an active pursuit toward concrete solutions for the more and more acute and wicked societal multifaceted, systemic challenges.
Our attempt is to integrate these approaches in a meaningful way in all activities: research, education, and impact. In education, the aim is to enable all Aalto University students to develop solutions to multidisciplinary sustainability challenges through creativity and entrepreneurship. We strive to provide them with the tools to assess the impacts of their own decisions and actions in society and environment. In research, the goal is to promote solutions that improve the quality of life and health, enhance the sustainable use of materials and clean energy solutions. In addition to our graduates' expertise and research results, Aalto University actively participates in the development of society.

We renew society with research-based knowledge, creativity and entrepreneurial thinking. In this way, we are creating new kinds of solutions to the world's grand challenges. Our research focuses on seven key areas. They combine our key areas of expertise, i.e., ICT, materials, art and design, and business with three major challenges: energy solutions, the living environment and health.
Through design, art and technology, we aim to bring solutions that improve the quality of life and health. We enhance the sustainable use of materials and the circular economy with smart systems, new materials, processing methods and user-centred design. We accelerate the energy transition extensively through the development of clean energy solutions in various sectors.
We promote competence need-based, high-quality and data-driven teaching and learning as well as a life-wide learning path.
