Call for mentors: Compassion mentoring in peer groups for doctoral students in autumn 2023
We are piloting compassion-themed mentoring in peer groups for doctoral students this autumn. We are now seeking doctoral students to become mentors in these compassion mentoring groups. The mentors will be trained for the task (three sessions).
The compassion mentoring groups have received positive feedback. The groups have fostered a supportive atmosphere and productive discussions on compassion-related topics. Much praise has been given to the fact that the groups are led by peer mentors, meaning doctoral students from the same university. The student mentors who have participated in this role have found it rewarding. Mentoring allows you to develop valuable skills such as facilitation and compassion skills which are needed in working life, for example when you supervise or teach students. You will also learn to guide group exercises.
The small groups will meet around six times during the autumn term (October-December). The activities in the groups include shared discussions and exercises on various compassion-related topics. The mentors will work in pairs. The groups will be held in English.
As a mentor for the compassion mentoring group, you don’t need to be an expert on the subject matter. Your task will be to facilitate the group’s work on compassion-related topics together with your co-mentor. In addition to the training, we will provide continuous support throughout the group session period, and there will be opportunities for shared learning and experiences among the mentors. Mentors will also receive a certificate for their role.
You can express your interest in becoming a mentor through The registration is open until September 13. Applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.
The compassion mentoring model was originally developed in Nyyti ry's Compassion for Universities project. At Aalto, the pilot is organized by the Oasis of Radical Wellbeing project as part of the services of the Wellbeing Desk.
