Aalto Sustainability Hub launches new Green Nudge Team programme for students
Aalto Sustainability Hub is launching a new Green Nudge Team programmeto engage students in developing sustainability on the Otaniemi campus. Green nudges are gentle persuasions that encourage sustainable behavior by making the greener option easier, quicker and more rewarding. The first pilot is launched in collaboration with Aalto University Student Union (AYY) and Aalto University Campus & Real Estate (ACRE).
‘Nudging is a positive way to push for change and encourage action’, explains Aalto Sustainability Hub’s Senior Advisor Meri Löyttyniemi. ‘For example, placing the vegetarian option first in a cafeteria line is an example of nudging currently used in campus restaurants.’
Green Nudges is an initiative of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), which recently launched featuring 40 nudges from around the world, including two from Aalto University. The BFIX-bike repair stations and bike parking opportunities on Aalto University’s Otaniemi campus encourage students and staff to cycle to the university. Another Aalto University green nudge featured by UNEP is the , which was set up by students to reduce food waste on campus by making the sharing of leftovers easier.

Student sustainability enthusiasts encouraged to participate
The Green Nudge Team programme is currently looking for both individual students and groups of students who would like to plan and implement concrete green nudges on Aalto University campus. The programme is carried out in group format and individual participants will be matched with appropriate groups.
‘This is a timely moment to consider new sustainable behaviours, as we need to adjust to COVID-19 and the new normal’, says Löyttyniemi. ‘Due to the fact that the campus is in limited use, it is important to consider new issues and possibilities to advance sustainability.’
A kick-off online workshop and team meetings will be organized for participants on Thursday 29 October at 16:00-19:00. Planning, piloting and reflection will take place from November to December and possibly continue in spring 2021. Aalto Sustainability Hub, AYY and ACRE will act as mentors and support networks for Green Nudge Teams.
Registration is open until 14 October. (webropol)
